(1) The order in which the paintings appear is roughly their temporally chronological order, beginning from the newest. (2) I paint almost entirely with my hands and fingers; I do not use brushes, except on rare occasions, and only very tiny brushes, for specific detail. However, most detail is achieved by applying the paint with the tip of a wooden stick that I picked up off the ground about 5 years ago. I only paint on cardboard. (3) I do not give my paintings titles, because I do not want to unintentionally influence the viewer to see or seek out seeing something that he might not naturally see of his own accord. (4) The deeper reason for my lack of titling has to do with the question regarding the meanings of my paintings. They have no meaning. They are imbued with meaning by the one viewing them, whoever he may be. I, as the creator of these paintings, am not the authority on what they may mean or portray; that is up to each individual viewer to decide for himself. The result is that a single painting here may mean something very different and portray different images for different viewers. I embrace that. Let your imagination wander, and see whatever you see in these paintings. Just as I cannot tell you who you are, I cannot tell you what to see. (5) I always paint to music, and it is the music that guides my fingers to create what they do. I do not begin with something in particular in mind to paint. Oftentimes, I will stop in the middle of painting, to step back for awhile and gaze upon what is taking shape in front of me, and I might see some imagery in there, and such might begin to guide how I paint the rest. But sometimes, there is no image, yet, and I only let the music and the painting itself guide me, until it feels right, and feels done, even if I have no idea what it is. It might take days, weeks, months, before some of my own paintings even bear any image and meaning to me. (6) You can read about my own interpretations of some of my paintings here, if you are so inclined to be curious. © Cheryl E. Fitzgerald November 2007
